buffy sing-along

I went to my first Buffy Sing-along this weekend. They host one periodically at the local indie movie house. Has anyone else been to one of these? I was admittedly somewhat tentative because I didn't know if it was going to be a crowd of rabid socially-backwards fan-freaks. I only spotted a few of those, most of the crowd was normal and there were quite a few other newbies.

It was a kick. The crowd would shout "bite me" when Spike came on screen, and "shut up, Dawn!" when Dawn would. They waved tissues during Giles song, blue bubbles during Tara's. There was a costume contest, including a guy with an eyepatch as Xander and a Faith that had the mannerisms down.

I long to attend a Buffy singalong. I missed out on the ones in New York this summer because I moved, and there aren't any out here in the west because they're all going on in the east. Sigh.

I'm in the west (AZ) and it seems to be growing here. :) are there any indie theaters or such where you are?

I actually made it to this one...it was fantastic!

There is actually a repeat performance coming up, because they sold out so fast the first round. They aren't sure when it will be yet, since they didn't plan for it. Keep an eye out for it though :^)

                Biomix,
did they do the same things at the one you went to?

There was no costume contest, but about everything else seemed to be there. A few audience members dressed up [yours truly included], but probably not enough for a contest.

Plenty of "Shut up Dawn!" was used, and the Buffi-oki was a blast to watch.

I am really looking forward to the next one...I hope we can make it a recurring thing!

what's Buffi-oki? the announcer said they would be starting it up again, but didn't explain what it was.

sounds bit like a play on Karaoke if I had to guess...

Yup, Cybele, that is exactly it. The show is subtitled so that you can sing along, and they show scenes with the subtitles on so that you can match the words...pretty funny really. They also do a scene from Hush and you get to talk as if they could and were. That can go either way, good or bad, depending on who volunteers...but we had a good set...hehe.

            matt,
yeah! the loft rocks. didn't realize there were other Tucson buffy folks here. :)
it's been running for seemingly ages there, decided to just jam over there last weekend and give it a try. I'd be very surprised if they don't do one again in October, what with Halloween and all.

before the musical episode they did a warm up episode. the audience got to vote for which one to watch. season 4 halloween episode was on the list, but didn't get voted so perhaps that will be shown at the next sing-along. I mean seriously, Giles wears a sombrero AND enters with a chainsaw. How could they not show that? ;)

first prize of the costume contest is a year's pass to the loft, so that's pretty good motivation to enter. I'm considering wearing my bunny suit, but flippin hell it's hot here for that and I don't know if it's worth it. :)

wow that is a good prize! you've inspired me to actually go to the next one i think :P though to be honest, i get annoyed when people sing along when its on tv lol... but i imagine a whole theater full of folks should be a fun experience.

I was actually surprised that the singing seemed kind of quiet. perhaps it was due to the number of new people like myself. there appeared to be more yelling at the screen and physical interactions (dancing, blowing bubbles, waving light sticks), than singing if that makes sense.

I also discovered that who you end up sitting near makes a difference in your experience. If you're around people who participate, you're more likely to feel comfortable doing so. Though if you're around people who participate too much it can be a bit tiresome.

I had a really nice guy next to me that had never been before either so we kind of kept each other from feeling too out of it. and this very flamboyant man next to him that was clearly a regular and quite fun because he would jump up and dance and such. however, directly behind me were two girls that sounded like teenagers and yelled so incessantly that I actually couldn't hear some of the dialog/music. I mean yelled teen stuff "like OMG he's soooooo hot" (sounding like she was going to wet her pants) and "shutupdawnshutupdawnshutupdawnshutupdawn" long after everyone else had stopped. So it quickly grew annoying. The crowd was more thick towards the front, so I imagine that would be a very different experience than where I was near the back.

If you go, pay the $3 for the buffy goody bag so you have props for the interactions. it'll be more fun. then next time you can bring your own if you want. :) Mostly, I think one of the big benefits to going is that it's a socially acceptable environment in which to yell loudly. ;)
